TWO

I took the knife from Christina and sliced a piece of cake to eat. Elizabeth gave me a fork and kissed me on my forehead. I took a bite of the cake and it really satisfied my stomach. I forgot how delicious cake tasted because we only bought it twice a year; for Xavier’s birthday and mines. We were the only ones who liked cake because the rest of my family didn’t like it. They always complained about how it was only bread with frosting on top.

“Thank you guys,” I smiled so wide and went ahead to kiss everyone’s forehead.

“Never forget that we love you, Ryan. We always will,” my mother got emotional and shredded a couple of tears.

I walked towards my mother and hugged her from behind because she was carrying the cake.

“I’ll never forget that,” I kissed my mom on the cheek.

It made me feel really happy inside visually seeing how much my family loved me. I was so grateful to have a family that loved me for who I was. I thought everyone deserved a family like that; supportive, caring, and open-minded.

I turned to look at Xavier and noticed his hands behind his back as if he had something behind his back. Xavier couldn’t stop smiling and his smile was contagious.

“What do we have here? How’s my little one?” I asked him and squeezed his cheeks.

“Happy birthday Ryan,” Xavier hugged me for five whole seconds. “I got you something.”

“Oh, did you?” I asked, surprised.

Xavier nodded his head.

“Well, let’s see it,” I smiled.

Xavier revealed what he was hiding behind his back and it was a picture frame of both of us on his birthday last year. I remembered that day so well. We sang him the birthday anthem and right before he blew his birthday candles I pushed his face down on the cake and he couldn’t stop laughing. It was one of my favorite memories.

“Come over here,” I hugged Xavier tightly and overjoyed. “Thank you. I love it.”

“You’re welcome, Ryan,” Xavier responded. “I love you.”

I was getting emotional and that’s exactly what I was trying to avoid, but it was getting to me. I felt the love between me and Xavier. That made me feel very happy inside because I knew Xavier meant it. There’s been many occasions were siblings, parents, friends, or other family members have turned each other in for being homosexuals. I knew a girl who I grew up with at school whose parents turned her in for being homosexual. It was only a month ago that it happened, but I never heard of her ever again. I guess Angela is dead now.

“I love you too,” I kissed Xavier on the cheek and smiled widely.

My mother and sisters walked away with Xavier so they could give me a moment with my father. I was aware that whatever my father was going to tell me was important because everyone left us alone to talk. I was a little nervous, but curious more than anything. I was trying to guess what was inside that box he had in his hands. Could it have been another frame picture or was it a new jacket? My parents gave me a black bonded hoodie jacket last year and I loved it.

”My boy, you’re finally eighteen. At last you’re a grown man,” my father said with a tearful tone. “I can still remember when you were a baby in my arms. You’ve grown so fast, my boy.”

“I think it was time to,” I responded with a giggle, staring at my father get emotional.

My father stared at me directly in the eyes and snorted his clogged nose. I could see his eyes get teary reminding me of the Ocean at the beach that I only saw once. My father took me to the beach once when I was ten years old. We snuck into the woods once and he took me to the beach coast to see the waves in the ocean. It was the only time I’ve ever left the city.

“Yes, it was. Therefore, I think it’s time for you to have this,” my father handed me the box he was holding in his hands.

I was actually excited to see what was inside the box because from the looks of it, my parents have been saving whatever was inside of the box all these years just to give it to me today. I couldn’t think about anything else, but how special this gift must have been to them. The box was the size of a shoe box, so my guesses couldn’t have been any bigger than a pair of shoes. I took a second to shake the box to make a final guess and it emitted a sharp ringing sound. What was it?
