We'll Hit 'Em Both
Sitting out at the back of the cafe they'd pulled up to fifteen minutes ago, the female pair placed their orders and made for the back of the building, ending up sitting outside on the decking as a light shower rained down. The younger, yet taller, girl leaned over and opened the table umbrella to stop them from getting wet while the blonde took a seat and unfolded the newspaper she'd bought a few a few miles back. They'd been going like this for some time now, driving from State to State, chasing the abnormalities, taking on jobs. It wasn't like they complained about sleeping in mouldy motels or hustling cards for gas, in fact, they probably enjoyed it. People like them couldn't work in the real world.
It was a fact.
Adrienna, a young woman who'd seen more than her fair share came from downtown Arizona. One evening after an attack on her family by a pair of demons, the girl that was then fifteen, was met by Evangeline.
By then, it was already too late to save anyone.
Both of her parents and her older brother had been killed in the Hell-bitches' mission to find whatever they were looking for while the girl hid in the place she'd been told to if anything strange happened. It was a cupboard laced with all sorts of foreign symbols she'd never seen, not even in the books she'd been made to study over and over again.
That stranger, a teenage then, had burst thought the front door, guns blazing and chants resonating without a care. Within a few minutes, both demons were gone and the unknown blonde was scouting the family home for the all-important item with no regard for the dead or scared. Needless to say, the slightly older girl had found what she was after, an odd looking ashen key in a petite wooden box carved with the same sigils pained around the ground floor. Not long passed when the house fell silent in the search - this was when the intruder was on the prowl for other goods to loot - when the only remaining survivor burst from the hidden room with a shotgun and pointed it at the back of the other girls head.
"Hand it over." The last member of the Stark family warned as sternly as she could manage.
The intruder just chuckled and flipped the key in the air above their heads before spinning around while the younger girl's eyes were on the item. Snatching the front of the barrel of the gun, the stranger pulled it forward and struck the girl in the stomach with the butt of it and then took a step back while her junior wheezed.
With a clink, the key hit the hard wood floor and the home dweller made an attempt to reach for it until she realised the firearm was level with her face. Freezing in her crouched position, the redhead swallowed hard and made eye contact with her company. No words were spoke for a good forty seconds as they just started at each other. The redhead weighed up the pros and cons of trying to tackle the blonde while the blonde herself flicked at her lower molar with her tongue as a smirk pranced on the line of being visible and not.
"Get up." The blonde spoke, her voice rough, like she'd gone without a drink for days.
Back at the present, the female pair sat facing each other, waiting, when a young woman came out with their order. Laying the tray down on the circular table, the employee gave a small smile and then disappeared back inside. The redhead picked up and sipped at her tea cup almost filled to brim with Earl Grey while the blonde opposite pulled the bottle of Jim from the paper bag on her lap and poured what must have been at least a triple shot into her instant coffee in the tall cardboard container.
The younger of the pair, Adrienna, sat back with her eyes closed, taking in the scent of her drink as she relaxed in the metal chair during the early morning air. "Anything in there?" She asked her friend skimming over the morning paper.
The blonde rubbed her eyes with the back of her right hand as she steadied the newspaper leaning against the small silver table. A mix of black eye liner and printing ink smudged across the older girl's pale, upper cheek. "People suddenly hitting the jackpot and then carking it."
"Crossroad's demon?" The redhead asked just before taking another sip of her fuel.
"Too early for collection." The blonde shook her head, barely.
"Fairies?"
"Possibly." With her eyebrows still raised in neither disbelief nor surprise, Evangeline pulled a cigarette from the metallic box on the table and lit it with a contorted expression.
Cleaning her hands on one of the complementary wipes, Adrienna hummed. "What's the plan this time?" Moving the cleanser out of the way, the younger girl picked up her breakfast, a Chinese chicken baguette and brought it to her mouth.
"It's 7am." The blonde scratched the top of her head as smoke floated from her nose. "It's barely light."
"No time like the present." Adrienna spoke as she munched, knowing her partner in crime wasn't the most fond of this specific time of day, meaning her comment meant either cruising for a bar first or crashing in a real bed some place.
Yawning again, the slightly shorter of the pair let her head fall over the back of the chair, her platinum bob reaching a few inches past the backrest. "There's something else."
"What?"
"Three guys with their faces gouged off within a mile radius of Sioux Falls in the last ten days." Evangeline flopped forward and pulled a disgusted face.
"That seems a little closer." Adrienna prodded the table with her free hand as she thought.
"We have a problem with that though."
"And that is?"
Evangeline spun the cardboard coffee cup around bit by bit. "Those Winchester guys. A close friend of theirs lives 'round there, right?"
"Is that your 'bad feelings' again?" The redhead mocked as she took another bit on the monstrous baguette.
Taking a deep breath, Evangeline ran her middle finger over her eyebrow while she went over the data in her head. "Every no name demon and then some that snooped around there has been had."
"But we're not demon's." The redhead sipped at her drink and smiled with her eyes closed.
"A rose by any other name." The blonde replied almost instantly.
"You keep saying it, but we're still human." Adrienna pulled a brush from her handbag and began brushing her hair.
Forgetting the coffee all together, Evangeline ripped the brown paper of the bottle just out of sight from any (basically non-existent) passersby and put the drink to her lips. Two mouthfuls later and the alcohol was on the table. Fingers resting on the edge of the metal top, the blonde cleared her throat. "Let's forget it for now. There's two possibles's within 50 miles. If with take the Falls first, maybe we can make to the other by the end of the day."
"We're hitting both?" Adrienna sounded surprised by the situation.
Cocking her head, the elder woman shrugged. "You know me."
"What changed your mind?"
Glancing up, the blonde pinched the right corner of her lips as her brows furrowed. "What are you talking about?"
Stopping what she was doing, Adrienna led her left forearm across the cold metal and in front of her as her other hand propped up her head. "The rumours about the Winchesters. Every time their name popped up, you pretended not to hear it and find something else to do."
"What can I say, I like the party life." The blonde prodded the nightclub ads on one of the near-end newspaper pages.
Ignoring the obvious brush-off, Adrienna finished her food. "We'll stock up and then set off." Swallowing the last drop of her tea, she stood up with her hands pressed against the table. "And if you keep drinking like that, I'm going to drive." Saying no more, the tall woman walked towards the end of the decking.
Evangeline watched her friend's back as she flicked through the twenties in her wallet. Scowling, the blonde slapped the money down on the empty tray and shoved a salt pot over it as she growled. "'Not driving my car." She pushed herself up and followed the redhead.
Salt, barbeque lighter fuel, ice tea, lollipops and gas for the car were all paid for at the cashier as the redhead waited. Light green eyes scanned the TV hanging on the wall behind the counter while recent news played and she waited for the transaction to end.
On the other hand, Evangeline was in the store two doors down picking up the obvious. A six pack of 'strawberry & cream shooters', a bag of chilli & cheese chips, a twenty crate of beer, a bottle of Jäger and forty of her trademark brand smokes. It was her basic survival necessities.
After a short while, the duo met back at the car after completing their shopping lists. The elder girl sat in the driver's seat while the redhead unwrapped an apple flavoured lolly and shoved it in her mouth. The custom cherry red RX7 was parked out of the way on a lay-by as the pair finalised their plan.
"Falls then Watertown?" Adrienna double checked.
Licking her teeth after her second S&C shooter, the blonde flinged the plastic pot out of the window and tapped the steering wheel. "If it were anywhere else, I'd say go Watertown first because there's more casualties and it's a bit closer, but seeing as the Winchesters have a history at Sioux Falls, they'd try to snatch the case first.
"I get your reasoning, but do you think we'll beat 'em to it?"
"We can only hope." The blonde turned her head and grinned.
It was a smile Adrienna had seen before; it was one that the older girl gave when she was going to twist the situation.
The last set of lights came up before hitting the highway to Sioux Falls and the youngest looked to the driver. "What changed your mind?"
"Not now." The blonde kept her eyes ahead as she revved the engine at the red light. "This may be the last time I get to rape a long straight before getting dragged into something unforgivable."
Adrienna shifted and faced out of her own window. "You're always so pessimistic."
Evangeline quirked her brow and wobbled her head. "I'm British; it's what we do." Stealing a quick glance, Evangeline coughed a laugh at the tension coming from her junior. "Besides, when did life go how we wanted without us nearly, almost very closely, having to sell our souls?"
"Just drive."
"Off a cliff?" The driver played.
"Har-har." Adrienna made an exaggerated face which just as quickly dropped into a serious one. "To the job."
