“Oh my God, did he cry?” Greta laughed, as I filled her in about Donny’s loss to me at last night’s race.
I forgot to mention that he had almost won when my Wolf got distracted by a rabbit - as she was known to do - but that wasn’t relevant.
Only my victory was.
“Nah, but he was pissed.” I laughed with her as the two of us made our way towards our lockers.
It was the first day back at Houston High after Spring Break, and both of us were in cheery moods for a change despite the fact that we hadn’t been given any classes together (apart from Gym, but that did not count since everyone shared gym.) Reaching my locker first I spun the combo and opened it to find my thick textbooks waiting for me, dusty from being left behind.
I sighed.
“Have they gotten thicker?” Greta asked with a shudder.
I turned to give her a ‘I think they have!’ look but she was too busy eying up her makeup in the small mirror mounted on my locker door. I rolled my eyes at her vanity and slipped the first few books into my small tote, wishing I could be more like Donny and be able to just look at page and remember what was on it.
That boy was too smart to be a Jock; it defied all High School Laws.
“So, I was thinking – you fancy a ‘Hike’ of our own after school?” Greta asked, wiggling her eyebrows at me as she said it.
‘Hike’ was our codeword for ‘Shift’, meaning she wanted to come around mine to let our Wolves out to play for a bit. My mood lifted at the thought.
“Sure, we never have anything planned anyway and I don’t think Donny will be around.”
I couldn’t resist checking my own makeup, making sure everything was in check before slamming the door shut and accompanying Greta to her locker, where I took my turn lounging against the metal wall while she sorted through her equally dusty books. Since we had no classes together, in between classes would have to be our gossip time we figured.
“Let me guess, he’s hanging out with Abby after school.” Greta sneered, whilst I resisted the urge to groan.
Greta had had a crush on Donny since before elementary and I knew for sure Donny had a thing for her, too. The only problem lies in that Donny is too much of a jackass to actually admit it and instead spends his free time making out publicly with girls who have features like Greta and obviously trying to make her jealous.
Well, it’s obvious to everyone but her, anyway, and I wasn’t about to hop on that freight train and clue her in.
That was between them two.
“Abby? Naw, he dumped her like, three weeks ago? He’s with Deena now, I think.” I answered mildly, not interested in who my brother was sleeping with this week.
The fact that he was considered hot commodity amongst the girls and has lost his V card way before I’ve even kissed a guy (despite us being the same age) was entirely too gross to even think about.
“Deena Johnson, seriously? But she's a complete skank!” Greta huffed whilst I hummed absently in reply.
The fact was Deena wasn’t a skank at all; she was actually a really nice girl. She just had the unfortunate problem of having the exact shade of hair as Greta.
“Move.” I frowned at the deep voice that came ordered close behind me and turned around... Freezing as I recognised the person standing behind me.
Kaleb Connley.
I found myself looking into a pair of eyes so dark they looked slightly purple. Flushing under his intense gaze I stepped out of the way and bristled at the way he watched me, almost as though he was mad at me. It was just a locker, for Christ’s sake! Before I could even think my actions through I let my annoyance get the better of me.
“A ‘please’, would be nice next time.” I scowled as I moved to stand next to Greta.
As I passed him I thought I saw him flinch at the corner of my eye and spun around to see what the problem was, but he looked calm. Had I imagined it? Catching me looking he glared at me, his top lip curling.
“Next time you better not be in front of my locker.” He snapped, before moving forward to wheel in his combo.
I stared at his back in shock whilst Greta slammed her own locker shut and turned to scowl at him.
“Jerk.” She muttered loud enough for him to hear as she fought with the zipper on her bag. “Ignore him Ari, Kale’s always cranky.” I reframed from commenting and so did Kale, who just carried on fishing books from his locker and piling them into his bag.
Finally slamming it shut; he turned and gave me one last glower before heading past me down the hall.
I was stunned.
“What the hell was that?” I huffed, leaning back where I was before. Greta shrugged and wooped as she finally shut her bag. Shouldering it she looped her arm through mine and shook her head so her short dark hair brushed my cheek.
“Who knows? He’s always so moody, don’t you think? But I mean, he only every hangs around with Kari and Dawson so is it any wonder?” I recalled how miserable the three of them always looked together and my lips curled in a smile. “Seriously, ignore him.” She urged me and I agreed, reluctantly, but something about our encounter just stuck in my mind all the way through homeroom.
That was the first time I'd ever spoken to Kale.
In the past I'd notice him – Hell, what girl hadn’t? – but he’d always been so distant with everybody that I'd not paid much attention to him, never mind actually spoken to the guy. The girl’s secretly loved him and the boys all envied his good looks and strong build, but that didn’t stop him from being such a dick to everyone, nor did it make us any inclined to take the plunge and actually speak to him.
Since he’d arrived here last year ago he’d immediately separated himself from the rest of us, always brooding and snapping at anyone who tried to get close. Sure, he was probably the hottest guy in our school but he was also the biggest jerk and wasn’t afraid to show it. He may be good looking, but he was also an outcast by his own default.
With effort I pushed him from my mind and went about my day, idling through lessons and trying to pretend I actually understood what was being taught. School wasn’t exactly my ‘forte’, nor was anything academic at all for that matter. Still, it was a good source of gossip and I found myself listening to various conversations throughout my lessons, finding out that yet another girl had gone missing during the weekend.
Another girl who would turn up mauled in the next few days.
The thought made me shudder and wish John would accept my Father’s help in the investigation. There were more of us in our Pack – we could help narrow the search area further. I wanted to speak to Greta about it so when the bell rang I flew towards the locker room and changed in expert time into my white gym shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms with my favourite black ‘THEY SEE ME ROLLIIN’ hoodie, featuring two pieces of sushi at the front.
I was totally badass.
“Ugh, we’re running track again!” Grata whined as she pretended to warm up next to me on the track.
I grinned happily as I stretched and touched my toes one at a time. Grata loved running in her Wolf skin, but hated physical activity in her Human one. She was a complete contradiction.
“Wa wa” I teased, leaping out of the way as she swatted at me. “Nah but seriously Gret.” I mumbled, shuffling close to her to keep my voice even lower, not that anyone none-wolf could hear us, anyway. I’d waited until we were out here for that very reason. “I heard another girl’s gone missing.” Greta’s face dropped as she lowered her eyes sadly.
“Yeah, it heard its Alison.” She answered, whilst i nodded my head.
Alison was a girl that had sat with me during calc for a while until she began dating Bret and moved to sit with him. Though we hadn’t exactly been ‘close’ persé, the fact that I actually had spoken to her, rather than her just be name and face I hadn’t known affected me more than the others.
Trying to lighten the mood Greta shoved me again causing me to stumble and almost lose my balance. I gasped in mock outrage.
“That was a low blow!” I laughed, before noting the various looks of amusement from the other girl’s stretching, all of them having seen at my almost fall.
Everyone but Kari Thompson, who just carried on warming up alone, ignoring everyone else as usual. With a grin I looked up to see if Miss Noble, our Coach had seen and instead found myself looking into a pair of familiar dark eyes. I immediately tensed.
From across the field, Kale was staring at me, his expression a mixture of anger and curiosity. After meeting his gaze his eyes narrowed before he turned around and focused back on soccer game the guys were playing. He was in goal, his broad frame more obvious in his skin-tight gym clothes. It all happened in just a few seconds, but it left me feeling uneasy, my heart racing and my palms going all sweaty.
“Ari?” Greta broke my out of my thoughts and I turned to see her watching me.
I shrugged off the weirdness and stood up to jog on the spot a little and warm up, though slowed when I felt another pair of eyes boring into me. Whirling around I caught Kari watching me this time before she quickly looked away, her expression wary. Weird.
“I’m gonna beat your ass today!” Greta promised and I gave her a challenging smile.
“You’re on.” I muttered, my thoughts still elsewhere as my eyes flickered back towards the boys playing soccer (and the keeper in particular).
Again my heart picked up at the sight of him and I frowned.
Something about Kale was making me uneasy and I wasn’t inclined to find out why.
