Year 1704
A little boy with his messy brown hair stood in the middle of a white forest near a frozen lake. It was snowing heavily. He wrapped his thick brown cloak tighter around his body.
With his eyes closed, he let himself feel the coldness surrounding him. The icy chill nipped onto his face; leaving a flushed tint of red frostbite on his baby cheeks.
Even so, he loved it.
He inhaled the icy air and exhaled it, watching his breath slowly disappear into thin air. A smile crept onto his features as he watched snow landing softly on his shoulder one by one. He never hated the snow, nor coldness.
Instead, he loved it.
Because it was on a snowy day like this when he first met her.
"Jack!" a little girl called. The little Jack turned around with a grin plastered on his face. He lightly giggled watching the girl desperately walked in the thick snow with great difficulties. "Aren't you going to help meeeee?" she whined.
Jack sighed softly and shook his head, "How many times do I have to tell you? Can't you dress like a girl for once? "
"pfft. so you can sneak peak and looked at my underwear? no thanks," she laugh with sarcasm.
Jack frowned and crossed his arms, "That's it. I'm not helping you."
The little girl's jaw dropped from his behaviour and she stomped her feet like the little kid she was. “Jack, just help me!" she whined once more.
"No!" He turned around and faced the frozen lake instead of facing her. Aish this girl. Can she not make him feel all weak in the knees?
She’s so cute when she's whining – especially when her nose and puffed cheeks were in bright red just like his. Except that she's cuter. Don't even mention when she pouts – she looked too adorable to him! He won't be surprised if a lot of boys adored her.
Jack chuckled to himself, thinking how silly he was being right now. Lover boy. Yes, he's calling himself a lover boy.
After a moment, Jack realized that it was quiet. Too quiet that he felt like he was lacking of air.
"Elsa?" he gasped and quickly turned around to see his best friend.
Elsa was lying unconscious on the freezing thick snow with her eyes closed and pale lips parted. She looked so weak and fragile. Panic strickened, Jack desperately rushed over to her, his heart felt like bursting open underneath the thick clothing,
"Elsa? Are you okay? Elsa! Wake up!!"
How he wished he had longer legs so that he could get to her even faster. It took about eight, heavy huge steps for him to reach her. Jack kneeled by her side and placed her head on his lap.
"Elsa, please be alright," he pleaded in distress. He covered her body with his cloak and pulled her closer for warmth.
He couldn’t think of what to do as his mind surged with anxiety on her. "I'm sorry I didn't help you. I was just joking," he said as he hugged her tightly, wishing that would at least give any sort of response.
His teeth chattered as a gush of strong, howling frosty wind developed them. He hugged her tighter with his eyes closed, silently begging to God that she’d be alright.
He hated himself. He was angry – blaming himself for everything that was happening to her.
On the other hand, Elsa peeked from underneath Jack’s warm hold, trying to hold herself back from laughing. But instead of laughing, she felt the warmth developing around her when Jack uttered his words to God. The words that made her love him even more.
"If you want to take her, take me instead. I don't think that I can live without her. She's important to me. She's the only one I have in this world after you took both of my parents. Just please... take me instead," he pleaded.
Elsa blinked her doe eyes, her lips curving into a small smile. How sweet he was. He's so gentle and respectful towards everyone around her. That smile of his was she adored most – her most favourite thing about him.
He was able to make her feel safe and warm and happy – the feeling of being extremely comfortable no matter whatever the condition is, as long as he’s there.
He's just so perfect for a friend.
He was protecting her from the snow, hoping that she'll get better by that. She exhaled her breath slowly, not wanting Jack to realize that she's actually conscious.
But she failed when she heard Jack breathed heavily with a small sob, "She can't leave me," he cried like a little boy would. Elsa bit her lip in guilt from his words and let her heart do what it wanted to.
Her arms were wrapped around his neck, "I won't, Jack," she whispered as a tear fell from her eyes, "I won't ever leave you," she repeated.
Jack blinked and pushed himself from Elsa who was silently crying but laughing at the same time. "YOU!!" he pointed his finger at her with a bitter frown, but he was still crying. “Don't you dare to ever do that again!" he fired.
Elsa simply smiled and nodded her head, "After hearing those sweet words..." she shrugged innocently, "Sure, why not?"
Jack pursed his lip and looked away from her. He didn't want to embarrass himself in front of her with his heated, blushing face. He cringed in embarrassment on the fact that he had audibly prayed to God for her.
"She can't leave meeee," Elsa exaggeratedly mimicked his words with a smirk, causing Jack to glare at her.
"Why you little–" he threw a snowball at her but she swiftly avoided from his attack.
She stuck out her tongue, "I am little. Don't tell me you're blind now," she laughed and ran away from Jack who was now chasing her through the thick snow.
Laughter and giggles could be heard by the villagers. And in a split of seconds, warm smiles crept on their faces.
"They really are best friends."
Year 1996
310 years has passed ever since he last saw her.
The girl that had grown beautifully and happily married to another guy.
He had always been there for her, but she couldn't see him. He should be sad that the woman he loved dearly had married another guy, but instead, he was happy – because she had moved on instead of crying each and every night, grieving over his death.
She blamed herself for his death, though she knew better that it wasn't her fault.
Jack Frost sighed softly from those memories when he last saw her.
The old woman, lying on her bed with her husband by her side, holding her hand as he whispered sweet-nothings to her. And so he knew that that was the time when she'd have her last breath. He felt happy that she's dead.
Why?
Because she'll come to him; live in immortality together and be with him forever.
However, his thoughts were to no avail she never came to him.
More than 300 years... 300 years... he was lonely.
All he could do was flew around with the wind. Sitting on trees and talked to the moon, playing with children who couldn’t even see him.
But overall, he felt empty.
What's the point of living when no one's there beside you? What's the point when no one can see you and doesn't acknowledge your presence? For the whole 300 years, he’s sick waiting for something to happen to him.
But what did he get? Nothing.
"Why was I reborn again?" he whispered to the moon.
"Do you have any idea how it kills me waiting for your answer?" he furrowed his eyebrows and sighed in despair, knowing very well himself that the moon won't answer him.
Jack laid himself on the top of the tree and tightened his grip on his staff, "I've died every day waiting for her to come back to me, but she never did. What exactly is the reason you made me immortal?"
His crystal hope of seeing her had faded away a long time ago. Even so, his love for her was stronger than before. He missed her. He wanted to embrace her. He wanted to pull her close to him. But those were just useless wishes.
"Elsa..."
The nostalgic name suddenly came to his mind. His heart was beating fast. Something’s wrong, he just knew it. He could feel his body had a surge of adrenaline rush, but he didn't know why.
He heard something calling out to him but he didn’t know what it was. It was a strange feeling – he was scared, but eager at the same time. He blinked his eyes curiously, his eyebrows knitted together to focus.
He took a slow step onto streetlight wires and quickened his steps to gather the wind around him. Finally he jumped and flew up to the sky with the chilled wind, following his instinct. He let himself flew freely, searching for what caused him to feel this sudden happiness.
He scanned around, expecting something to catch his attention.
But there was nothing.
By then, he started to give up after searching for it for hours – until he reached a small, warm house with dim orange light casting over the front door.
"What...," he honestly didn't know what he was waiting for – but his heart was beating madly. Despite that, he didn't hear or receive a thing. He slowly turned around with his shoulders slumped in disappointment as he walked away.
But something stopped him.
A baby's cry stopped him from walking away.
Curiosity arose in him, making him walk closer to a window and peeked inside the house. There were a married couple and an older woman. He struggled to peek through a small gap of a slightly opened window and saw the old woman cradling a baby in her arms near the fire pit that warmed up the house.
The mother of the newborn was lying on a bed, sweating as the father was comforted her.
Jack's eyes were wide open as a gasp escaped from his lips.
Those married couple...
He stumbled back in realization.
They were the parents of the one he loved 300 years ago.
"Then the baby...," His eyes landed on the old woman who was walking towards the couple with the newborn in her arms. The old lady, known as the grandmother, handed the baby over to the mother,
"It's a girl," she smiled lovingly.
The mother held the baby dearly, her lips trembled as she tried to hold back from crying out of happiness. But as soon as she met the baby's doe eyes, she couldn't help but to smile and cry in happiness.
She pulled the baby close to her and kissed her forehead, "Elsa...," she whispered and hugged the baby.
"Elsa? That's a nice name. Queen Elsa," the father smiled warmly as he caressed the baby's head softly. Suddenly, the window banged open furiously.
Cold wind gushed inside the house and the father quickly shut it. "What a strong wind," he mumbled.
Jack landed softly by the bed where the mother was calming her newborn baby from crying. "There... there... Elsa," she soothed with her gentle, weak voice.
Jack just stood there, trying to find a word to say. He stared at the baby for a long time, until the baby's eyes landed on him. Jack's eyes eventually met the baby's ever-so-familiar, teary, brown eyes. He clutched his chest as thankfulness spread through his body as he fell to his knees.
"She's back," he managed to whimper with a smile. He slowly reached for her small hand with his trembling ones, and once he touched it – the baby's cries stopped.
The mother gasped in horror as she felt her baby suddenly went from warm to cold in her arms, and her hair slowly turned white as snow.
That was when he realized what he had done to her.
GASP.
