Description
I've always been different from the rest, dangling just between normal and weird. People don't see me, don't pay attention to me. I was happy with that at first, but now the silence next to me is unbearable. I just want someone to talk to, is that too much to ask?
Foreword
Erised's P.O.V
"Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine." I turned the volume up as I walked home, the lyrics blaring into my skull like thunder. Honestly, I didn't care if my hearing got worse. Singing along quietly, I shoved my hands in my pockets with my mp3 and turned the corner.
It was dark, not a cloud in the sky, and I found myself wanting to just fly up into the stars. I could do that, if only there weren't so many people awake at this time. Mom used to tell me how back in her childhood, everyone was always asleep at the same time, making it so anyone could do whatever they wanted without anyone finding out. I wished to do that.
My hood was pulled over my face as I scowled to the ground. I was born in the wrong time wasn't I? The only person in the entire city (possibly the world) with wings.
If the world today wasn't so scared of 'new', I'd be up there right now, flying above the houses and trees, but no, I was grounded here on this hunk of rock called a planet. Life was better when I didn't have to keep my wings secret as a child, but I only played in the backyard then.
Detatching myself from my very depressing thoughts, I turned another corner to make my way home, faintly hearing a noise over the music I was playing.
Blinking and pulling one of my earbuds out, I listened for it again. When I didn't hear anything, I was about to put it back in, but suddenly heard the same noise again. Only louder. Turning my music down, I looked towards the direction the noise was coming from and found an alley where the light of the streetlamps didn't reach. Like the shadows were sucking in the light like blackholes, making it disappear.
"Hello?" I called out, one hand on the edge of the wall as I peered inside the darkness. My eyes tried to adjust but the light behind me made it hard to focus. As I stared into the darkness, I heard rustling as a trash can tipped over in the way back.
A figure stood up and I took a step back. I was not getting mugged tonight.
Just as I was about to run away though, their eyes started glowing, staring right at me.
"Wait." they said, and though it was a whisper, I heard it clearly. I opened my mouth to tell the creepy guy I wasn't going to stay here when a bright light suddenly burst from from behind them.
It was so bright I had to cover my eyes with my arms before the glow dimmed just a bit. Peeking between my arms, my eyes widened at the sight before me. Behind them was something I thought I'd never seen on another human being.
Wings.
