Crushing on someone is different from dating someone.
She learnt about this during her final semester of Pre-Law. The nice guy she was crushing on suddenly confessed to her, and she was flabbergasted.
The shock came in degrees. At first she was obviously happy. Who wouldn’t? Having someone you’ve been admiring since the start of Pre-Law confessed to you and asking you to be his girlfriend is something that would be a dream to any girl. She thought she was one of the girls, too, so she was thinking about how should she be happy about it?
Thinking about wanting to be happy being someone’s girlfriend, she then had a panic attack. What if he wouldn’t like her anymore once he knows what kind of person she is? Her grumpiness, her snarky attitude, her straightforwardness, her tendency to curse whenever things went wrong? The friends around her kept telling her that she should control herself; don’t let it show. Don’t be yourself when you’re with him, or you’re going to lose him.
Listening to her friends’ advice, she tried to stop her mean words whenever someone was saying something stupid. She tried to cover her laugh and bit her tongue when she felt like cursing. She tried to become the girl that would fit her boyfriend’s nice attitudes.
But slowly, she was afraid of losing herself.
One night, while she was on Facebook, checking out the assignment given by the lecturer for a Social Psychology class, a message popped out from Sergeant. They met this afternoon when she was having a rather quiet lunch with her nice boyfriend (which was not her way of having lunch, usually), and Sergeant decided to joined them. She was relieved, to be honest, having someone else to talk with because she hated quietness in the air.
‘you were quiet this afternoon’ ,he said.
‘no I wasn’t’ she replied.
‘yes you were. you were boring’ he replied, and she blinked.
‘how was I before this?’ she asked him, and it was a looooong minute before he answered.
‘you were chatty, full of stories. You were fun. I like the fun you.’ He said. Still typing.
‘you were marvellous and unrestrained. It’s a shame seeing you so timid’ he finished.
She palmed her face, and smiled.
‘I AM MARVELLOUS. and I was just being cautious. Don’t want him running away scared’ she replied, and he replied with a green smiley; the vomiting face.
‘being scary is your charm. If he’s going to hate it now, you think he’ll like it later?’ he asked, and she sighed.
Stop being so fucking caring right now, Sergeant, she thought when their conversation ended that night (with him giving an LOL and she replied with a yawn).
Though the next week, she said sorry to her boyfriend.
