The next day at school, I was depressed, I didn't want to talk to anyone. I sit down at the back of the class looking out the window. I look at the posters all over the room and looked at one of the paintings Jessica did. I think of all the good times we had. And I realize, that was the past. Now I need to think about the present. Just minding my own business, the announcements come on, and I see the principal on the t.v.
"Good morning everyone," he said, plainly. That's all I heard because I was spacing out, thinking of the old memories me, Tiffany, and Jessica had. I think of the time when we all went camping and slept together in a tent. We told all our secrets, we talked about what happened during our weekend, and we tried to relieve all our stress and talked it out. And I think to myself, that was the most memorable moment we had. I missed all those memories. I burst into tears just thinking about them. I run to the door, not wanting anyone to see me cry and sob. When I open the door, I hear Tiffany running after me and shouting my name. I run straight to the bathroom and lock myself in a stall. I cried and sobbed. Tiffany crawled under the stall and sat next to me.
"It's okay Krystal. We all know she's in a good place." She said, tearing up. Then we both cried next to each other. I tried to forget the smell of the tiolet, thinking about how many people decided not to flush. I want to go back to class, but my face is all swollen, my eyes are red, my nose is filled with snot, and I just can't stop crying. We tried to cheer ourselves up, stop crying, and forget about our best friend's death. But a couple minutes later, we both heard the door open. I wanted to unlock the door stall, yell at those girls, and tell them to leave us alone, but I knew I couldn't do that because it's not my bathroom. I stood up and pulled Tiffany up with me. I knew she didn't want to stand up, but I didn't want the girls to know we're here and think we're eavesdropping.
"Shhh!" I tell her. She mouthes to me, "Why?" I think about how this is a bad idea, but we're already here and can't get out know. So instead of getting out we both tried to be skinnier and hide in the stall.
Then I hear a familiar voice, "Ugghhh! I hate that girl! I don't know why everyone likes her!" Tiffany and I look at each other with wide eyes.
Then another familiar voice comes out, "I know! Everyone gives her special treatment just because she's a goody-goody! I hate it! What about us?! We're so much prettier and popular than her!"
"Uugghh... let's go. We might get more detention if we don't go now. It's so not fair that they let Krystal and Tiffany stay out of class because of their 'loss'." The other one said.
Then we heard the door open and close. I thought about who those girls were. They were girly and their voices were so high, it was so annoying. And at the top of my head, I knew who those girls were. They were the school's popular people. Victoria and Zoey, the girls who will never talk to you unless you were someone famous. I unlocked the stall to see Tiffany with a shocked face.
"They were probably talking about Jes-" Tiffany said, being interrupted by me.
"Yeah maybe, we never know." I said. I was not one-hundred percent sure if they were talking about Jessica. There are many other people those girls hate.
"Do you know who those girls were?" Tiffany aksed. I don't understand why she doesn't know ho those girls were. It was so obvious.
"They were obviously Victoria and Zoey." I told her. She started to look like she was on the right page. The final bell finally rang and I unlocked the stall door. I can finally breathe the fresh air.I decided to go because I didn't want my mom to get worried again.
"It's time to go. I'll see you tomorrow, Fany." I told her, going to the door. I waved at her, but instead she ran next to me.
"Wait! I don't want to go alone. I still need to do some stuff." She said.
"I can't, my mom will get worried again." I said.
"Alright, Bye..." Tiffany sighed and went to the classroom.
As I walked home, I realized I left my stuff at school. I didn't even remember about anything this morning. I didn't want to waste any time, so I turned back and walked quikly back to the school. Tired and panting, I finally arrived at school. I walked slowly to the classroom but stopped when I heard a commotion. Why is there a commotion here? This is a school, not a karate class. But, I heard the same voices in the bathroom. I tried to take a closer look and noticed Victoria, Zoey, and Mr. Mullings, my gym teacher and my sister, Samantha's, fiance`. Why are they yelling at each other? I came a little closer and my ear drums popped. They were shouting like an agry mob.
"Shush! There could still be people here!" Mr. Mullings yelled. Of course there is still people here, this is a school. Why don't they fight somewhere else?
"So?! Why'd you do that?! She could tell the police!" Victoria exclaimed.
"No she won't! I trust her! We could always-" I interrupted him. I wanted this commotion to stop, so I had no other choice than to come in. I came into the classroom to see Mr. Mulling sweating. I tried to act cool so that they know I wasn't here. "Oh, I didn't know you were here. Did I interrupt you guys?"
He was looking at the girls nervously. "N-no. W-we were j-just... um... talking about the...um..." He paused for a while.
"The what?" I told him, making him more nervous. I notice I'm being kind of rude right now.
"The...um...extra credit!" He said like he just figured something out, "What are you doing here?"
I looked at the coach and then at the girls. The girls are looking at me like I'm a peice of junk. "I came to get my stuff."
The girls rolled their eyes. I rolled my eyes back at them, stuck out my tongue out, and got my backpack. What's with those girls? "Bye, I'll see you tomorrow," I said, walking towards the door.
"Bye!" The coach said, smiling. The girls rolled their eyes again. I wanted to stay and listen, but I was too tired.
As I walked across the street to my house, I saw a car. It was Jason's, Jessica's older brother. Just because my dad and his mom work at the same company, doesn't mean he can come here everyday like it's his own home. I walked through the grass and opened the door.
"I'm home..." No one replied. I got nervous. Ever since Jessica's death I felt no safety anywhere.
"Hello?" I asked again. I heard footsteps. I ran to the kitchen and got a knife. It turned out to be my mom. She really scared me.
"What are you doing with a knife?" my mom said, worried.
"I thought you were someone else. I thought you were the killer, mom. No one answered me when I got home."
"Oh... don't worry. It's just me," she said, "Why are you only here now?"
"Oh, I forgot my stuff and had to go back and get it. Why?" I said.
"Nothing, I was just worried. I'll be upstairs if you need anything." She turned around and went to the stairs.
"Wait! Where's Dad?"
"Oh, he's with Jason again. They'll probably be back by midnight."
I sighed. "Again?"
My mom sighed too. "I know. Goodnight."
I sat on the couch and decided to read. But all I concentrated on was all the the memories Tiffany, Jessica, and I had. I looked around the room. It was so big, but we only have a small family. It was getting stuffy, and I wanted to get some fresh air. I opened the windows and looked out at the stars. I remember the three of us, always waiting for shooting stars and making wishes. I was about to go upstairs when I heard the garage door open. I see Jason struggling with dad's arm around his shoulder. Dad is drunk...again.
"Hello? Mrs.Lee?" I hear Jason say.
"She's sleeping." I somehow surprised him and went to him.
"Oh, it's just you. Your dad is pretty drunk." he said with my dad's arm around his shoulder.
"Oh, I'll help you." I told him, grabbing my dad's heavy arm and putting it around my shoulder. "Errgghh... I never thought my dad was this heavy." Jason just chuckled. But I wasn't joking. I've never carried my dad before, and he is so heavy.
"Aahh..." we both said at the same time when we dropped him on the bed.
We walked together downstairs.
"Umm... Jason? Can I ask you something?" I said cautiously.
"Yeah, sure. What is it?" he said like it was nothing.
"Uuhh... why are you always visiting my dad?" I said.
"Umm... you know... jus' hanging out." he said, cooly, "Why? You got a problem with it?"
"Come on, really? Don't be joking around with me. I don't think you're 'jus' hanging out'." I said.
"Seriously! Good-bye and goodnight, Krsytal!" he said, smiling and walking to the door.
I ran in front of him.
"Wait! You better not be lying to me! You're here every second of every minute of every single day! Tell me the truth now! I'm not joking around with you!" I shouted, trying to keep my voice down, knowing my mom, dad, and sister are sleeping. I didn't want to wake them up, but I just had to scream. This was no time to joke around. There was complete silence for a minute. Jason finally rolled his eyes, sighed, and spoke.
"Fine...it's just... it's..." He stopped, grabbed my arm, looked around, and dragged me outside.
"Okay, this is a secret. You can't tell anyone. Your dad already knows, of course. I don;t know how to say this... but, we're...related..." he explained.
"What?!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, "You're my b-brother?! I yelled, a little bit softer.
"I know, your dad and my mom had me two years before you were born and seven years after you were born."
"What?! How'd this happen?! Why?!" I yelled, a lot louder.
"Alright, I'll tell you everything... You know like my mom and your dad work at the same company?" he explained. I nodded.
"Well, they had to go on a business trip. They had to be in the same hotel room, I don't know why, and things just happened."
I thought for a while. I don't know why I was mad, I actually wanted to be my best friend's sister and, I don't really blame Dad because he's barely home all day, and I don't see him much. I'm just furious about why they didn't tell me this earlier. We could've had lots of fun, but now we can't.
I made up my mind and told Jason, "Alright, I'll forgive you for now. Does anyone else know?" I said, calming down.
"No... I don't know." he said.
I nodded my head. "Oh, well... I'll see you next time, then. Bye.." I waved at Jason.
"Kay. Bye..." He waved at me and went to his car. I went inside, a little shocked. I decided, since I was tired, to forget about it and sleep.
When me and Tiffany were walking down the hallways or the school, I saw and ID that said Nicole Lee, the age was 23, and what surprised me the most was that it had a picture of Jessica, but she had blonde hair. I thought it was for she could go to the club, but she would never do that. And I've never seen Jessica with blonde hair, ever in my life. I picked it up and showed it to Tiffany. For some reason, I had the urge to tell the police. But I knew why. I just wanted to get all of this out of my mind. I'm sick and tired of feeling no safety at all.
"W-who is this?" Tiffany stuttered.
"I don't know, but I think we need to go to the police about this." I said.
"Yeah, I think we do. But we need to get to class first. We'll do it after school." Tiffany told me.
Finally, when the last bell rang, I hurridly packed my stuff and ran to the front gate. I don't know why I'm so eager to go to the police. I looked at the sky, looking for cloud animals. The wind runs through my hair, making it go crazy. From the distance, I can see Tiffany walking to the front gate. That took her so long.
"What took you so long?" I asked.
"Sorry, the teacher needed to talk to me. Let's go!" She said. We walked all the way to the police station in silence. It's always like this when we walk together. It's just maybe we're missing one person. And that person is Jessica. She's always the one to start a conversation. We finally arrived at the police staion.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Oh, hi. How may I help you?" One of the police officers said.
"Um... we came to give you this..." I said, giving the ID to him. I'm feeling very nervous and thinking to myself why I wanted to come here anyway.
"We found it on the ground. It looked like our friend, but she didn't have blonde hair, it wasn't her hair, and it wasn't her age either. We didn't know what to do, so we just came here instead," I continued.
"Okay, but first, how old are you guys? You have to be eight-teen years or older to report something. And do your parents know you're here?" The policeman said.
Tiffany and I looked at each other.
"We're only seven-teen... but we're almost eight-teen. Please let us stay here. We didn't tell our parents. She left her phone at home, and mine is low battery." Tiffany said.
"Alright, but you still have to call your parents first." He said.
"Okay sir," Me and Tiffany said at the same time. After calling our parents, we went back to the policeman.
"Okay, so we'll call you guys if we have any information." He said, "That's all, have a nice day girls."
"Thank you, sir!" We both said.
We walked home in silence again until Tiffany broke the silence, "Krystal?...Can I sleep over at your house tonight? I don't really feel safe sleeping alone."
"Yeah, me too. Sure I can ask my mom." I said. I'm glad she asked because I didn't want to sleep alone either. She looked at me and smiled. When we arrived near the house, Jason's car was there again. I don't know why, my dad's not even home right now. Oh, well. He probably just came to give something. Right when I was about to open the door, the door popped open, and I saw Jason.
"Hey," I said.
"I have to go, so," He said. We went in to see mom sitting on the couch.
"Where have you been?" She asked.
"Didn't I call you?" I said.
"Yeah, but it took you a long time to come back," she said, worried.
"Sorry, we needed to talk to the police. Can Tiffany sleepover tonight?" I asked
"It's okay, at least you're both safe. And sure, you have to call your mom too. You have to explain everything after dinner," my mom said.
"Thanks," Tiffany told us.
Because of the fact that my mom is a great cook, Tiffany and I had second... maybe even more. After eating Mom's big dessert, me and Tiffany helped with the dishes.
We finished up, and my mom said, "Okay, you two, explain," She said. Me and Tiffany explained everything to my mom.
After what seemed like a year, which was only a week, the police finally called. My mom answered it. "Hello?...yes...we're doing fine thanks...yes...sure here..." She gave me the phone,"Hello?" I said.
"Hello? Is this Krsytal?"
"Yes, how may I help you?"
"We found some stuff about Nicole. If you would like to go to the police station, we can explain everything." he said.
"Alright." I put the phone down and tried to wake up my mom. After a slap on the face, she finally woke up.
"What??" she groaned.
"Can I go to the police station?"
"No"
"Grrr!" I didn't argue because there was no use and I didn't want to interrupt her sleeping. I went downstairs and got the phone.
"Hello?"
"Yes, I'm here."
"My mom said I can't go, so please tell me the information right now."
"Okay. So, we went to where she lived, and she looked exactly like her. We made her admit her age, and she's actually the same age as you guys. And apparently, Nicole is her real name. We looked at her profile, and she's nothing like your friend. She's usually never at school, we saw her house, or apartment, it's all messed up inside, and she barely has any food."The police explained.
"Oh....but why do they look alike?" I asked curiously.
"I wasn't finished...So we took some of her blood and what's surprising is that she has the same DNA as your friend's dad." I was speechless. I didn't know what to say. I dropped the phone in shock, but never hang up.
I didn't want to get involved in anything anymore. I wanted to forget about the past. Think about the present. I didn't want to know anything else. I don't care about the past anymore. I didn't care if Nicole was Jessica's twin, or an imposter, or if she really was Jessica. I want to run away. I wanted to live my own life because now, I have nothing. I want to forget about Tiffany. I want to forget about my parents, Jason, Victoria, Zoey, and most of all Jessica. That was the past, I didn't know about the future until now, since a long time ago, because now I'm with Jessica. We're all in a good place now.
