A A A A

“Well we have to do something!” The woman said, trembling with fear from speaking out of turn with the man.

“If she does have magic, she is going to get killed, Merilda. What then? I`m not having my only child ripped out of my hands and fed to the kings savage dogs!” He shouted to her, who was now cowering on the floor of the room.

“You`re not thinking as well as you once did. She`s staying with us. I don`t care if she has magic or not. She`ll be able to tell us, and we`ll be able to hide it.”

“They all think that. You have no idea what you`re getting yourself into, woman.”

Merilda was crying now. She glanced up at the man, hate filling her eyes. The man simple glared back at her. He was planning to hit her for her stupidity, but then the child started to cry from its cot. All the anger and spite left his eyes in a second, and he rushed over to the weeping child.

“Thea, dear child, do not cry. I am here now.”

The child`s crying subsided as her father lifted her out of the crib and held her tightly, singing her a lullaby at the same time.  He glanced down at the young child, who, when their eyes met, chuckled and snuggled up to his chest. The mother watched the scene for a while, and then slowly rose from her corner. She broke the silence with her soft voice.

“She has your eyes, you know.”

“She has your lips.”

The man and the woman stared into each other`s eyes for a time, and then shared a tender kiss. This time, the man spoke first.

“Please, my dear. Let me take her to Lundene. She`ll be safe there, you know she will be. I know she`s going to be closer to the city, but it`s better than here. You don’t want our daughter growing up in the heart of the city do you?”

The woman shook her head, agreeing with what he was saying. Surely it was better like this. At least, until they were sure that she was normal. They were just taking a precaution. Surely this wasn`t goodbye.

She followed the man out of their house, with him having to bend down to get through the door. He was the tallest person she had ever met, but that was one of the things that attracted her to him. She watched as he swung his legs over the horses back with ease, being sure not to hurt the sleeping child in his arms. He took one last look at her before kicking his horse and galloping out of the city gates.

She watched until they had completely disappeared from her sight. She sighed, and returned to the house.
