Unbreakable

A A A A

Kairi stood in the water of Destiny Island's ocean, looking out across the water, waiting for someone important to her. She closed her eyes, listening to the soothing sounds of the waves as they crashed onto the shore. She felt something slip into her hand, which made her smile, but she didn't open her eyes. She didn't need to.

"I'm home," came the all too familiar, soothing voice of the one she'd been waiting for. She turned to face him and finally opened her eyes.

"Welcome back," she told him. Sora smiled. His face was turned up toward the sky, eyes closed, taking in the warmth of the tropical sun. Kairi admired how the orange sun made his face glow, making him look more peaceful than he already was.

"I'm tried," he said, "I want to stay here for a while. I don't want to leave."

"Why not?"

"Because that means I have to leave you." Kairi chuckled and closed her eyes again, tilting her head up as well.

"No matter where you go, or how far apart we are, we'll always be together. We'll never be far apart. We're unbreakable."

"But being by your side is so much sweeter." Kairi smiled a bit more and squeezed his hand.

"I'll always find my way to you, or you to me. No matter how dark things seem to get, how hard they seem, we'll always find our way to each other." Sora nodded, opening his eyes and looking down at her.

"You look pretty today," he commented.

"Do I not every other day?" she teased.

"Being away from you for so long, I began to forget the small things. Like how the setting sun makes you look more calm, and how the ocean makes you smile in ways I've never seen you smile before. I forgot just how angelic you look during the sunset." Kairi turned and wrapped her arms around Sora, so he did the same to her in return, pulling her close protectively.

"I forgot how safe I feel with you," she said, "I've been waiting far too long for this moment again." Sora nodded and buried his face in her hair, refusing to let her go again. He wouldn't leave her so soon, not that easily.

"Well, Princess, I'm here to keep you safe now."

"Don't call me that. To you, I'll always just be Kairi, the girl that fell from the sky and landed in your life. I don't want to be a princess, anyway, if it means I have to be away from you."

"You're too much," Sora chuckled and Kairi smiled, shaking her head slightly.

The waves lapped up against their legs, soaking their clothes as the tide came in. Still, they stood together in the water, letting their clothes get wet, bathing in the warm setting sun's rays. They didn't pull away until the sky became dark and night swallowed the world. When it did, they moved back onto land, their feet now covered in sand, and laid on the ground, looking up at the stars together, neither talking for a while.

"What's it like?" Kairi asked, breaking the silence.

"What?" Sora asked, confused, and turned his head toward her. She looked back at him before looking back at the sky, thinking of the best way to explain.

"Getting everyone's problems dumped on you," she explained, "What's it like? I mean, it can't be easy."

"What are you-"

"Don't play dumb, Sora, you know what I'm talking about. Every time you land somewhere, all their problems are dumped on you. I know it's true because of all the stories you keep telling us, so tell me, what's it like?" Sora was quiet for a moment as he thought about it.

"It's tough," he admitted, "but I know there's a lot of people that rely on me, so I do what I have to do. For them." Kairi nodded, pleased with the answer she got.

"I look up at the night sky and wonder what worlds I'm looking at," Kairi commented, "It's something I started doing after I returned to the islands. I always wondered if I was looking at a world you were on and that got me through the days. Just...wondering about all the good you were doing for the worlds."

"The thought of coming home to you was what got me through the days," Sora replied, "Whenever I felt down, I thought about you and getting to see you again and it helped push me through. Now I'm back."

"And let's hope you stay for a while this time."

"Yeah. I could use a break for a while. I need to slow down a bit."

"You sound like an old man."

"I've worked harder than most people our age, I deserve a vacation." Kairi nodded and rolled onto her stomach.

"Well, make sure to sleep in aaaaaaaaaall day tomorrow," she said and laughed, "I'll be there when you wake up with some breakfast for you."

"Since when do you cook?"

"Who said I was cooking?" They both laughed and stared at each other for a moment, then started laughing again.

"Well, I think it's time to go inside and sleep," Kairi said after a few moments of silence. Sora nodded, so they both stood up and headed to their homes, walking through the water together. They hesitated for a moment before going to their homes. After all, they didn't need to say goodnight, it was spoken for them already.

They were unbreakable, and nothing would change that.
