i. Snow Crystals

Her breath fogged out before her, floating around in a creamy cloud before dissolving into the air.

She had just passed her audition.

She stepped out into the soft carpet of snow, her shoes making a gentle crunching sound as she made her way across the street carefully, taking baby steps.

"Sis." Her baby brother, Yoomin, waves to her from the other side of the street.

She could hear his voice although he was quite far away; it had been like that since they were little.

"How'd you do on your audition?" His voice seemed to poke her ears, tickling her nerves and making her giggle out loud, all the attention turning to her out in the quiet street.

She was the only one that could hear him, and understand him, for that matter; no one else could hear his voice. He was mute.

She had even teased him jokingly when she heard his voice crack in her head, when he had turned 13.

"I bought cake for you!" He laughed gleefully, the sound of joy ringing, vibrating in her head.

She hoped it was Lemon Cream cake; the light softness and slight sweetness of the spongy cake; the icing, along with the minimal tartness adding a bit of crisp, tasted just like lemons, mellowed down to a thinned concentrate.

She finally stopped her feet from stepping out mechanically, seeing the dark asphalt start inches away from the toes of her feet.

A truck whooshed by her, adding to the already freezing air seeping into the spaces on her jacket.

Shifting her feet a little, she steps back, feeling a small drop of moisture on her neck.

What was it?

She glaces up at the sky, gazing, waiting for her eyes to focus on the tiny details in the cloudy, bland sky.

It was then she saw the crystals drifting, one by one, from the shapeless, lumped up clouds.

They were so pure. So clean.
