Cigarette Smoke

They left, leaving me alone again. I asked them nicely not to go, not to leave until I finished, but they left anyways. Bastards. Like they would die if they waited two more minutes, just until I had finished with my own cigarette. Whatever. I don’t care anyway; I could finally enjoy it peacefully, without someone hurrying me and getting on my nerves.

I brought the cigarette to my lips and leaned against the cold wall, taking the smoke into my lungs and then breathing it out again; watching how the ghost grey smoke danced in the fog-like light, before it disappeared in the thick air of night.

I liked the weather in that breezy moment. Not too cold, even though it was late night and raining slightly. Actually, the rain was just perfect – not too hard, but sensible, just enough to tickle exposed skin where the raindrops landed.

I took another smoke of the poison encased within the cigarette. The venom started to spin in my head. Perfect. This was the feeling I was waiting for, this was what I needed in order to get my mind off of all crap that had happened to me.

I glanced at the cigarette – a few more smokes and it would vanish. I took another breath and concentrated on how my blood ran through my fingers, my legs and face. This was the feeling I had waited for. Too bad I have to go now. Too bad the feeling wouldn’t last long.

I threw the cigarette stub away from me after taking one last smoke. I could still feel the heat under my fingers and in the smoke I had taken into my lungs. I breathed out and watched again for who knows how long; watching how the smoke faded slowly into the chill night. Why couldn’t problems disappear like that? A sigh escaped my lips as I put hood on my head. It was time to go home.
