02 || First Mission

Claire awoke early the next morning due to a loud rumbling sound. Once her eyes were open though, the noise had stopped. She was not pleased.

 
"What the hell was that?" She mumbled. She turned her head over to see what time it was, the clock reading 5am, causing her to let out an angry groan. "I can't even sleep in peace."
 
She laid there for awhile, trying to fall back asleep but to no avail. The rumbling noise had startled her awake so now she was unable to fall back asleep.
 
"Fuck this." She huffed and threw the covers off of her, deciding that she'd get up early to get ready for the day. She tossed her sleepwear into a basket in the corner of the room and pulled on black leggings and a loose shirt over a sports bra. She grabbed her toothbrush and a towel before heading towards the bathroom down the hall. Claire gave a wide yawn as she dragged her feet across the floor. She slammed the door to the bathroom closed lazily, washed up for the day, and then headed to the cafeteria when she was refreshed.

 

"Hi Jerry!" the girl greeted when she came up to the window.

 

"Oh hello dear! What can I get for you this lovely morning?" Jerry beamed back at the girl.

 

Claire wasn't sure if she liked his happy and cherry attitude this early in the morning. She can be pretty grouchy when she didn't have enough rest, but nevertheless she told him her order and headed to one of the tables to the side to sit. She let her head fall to the table as she closed her eyes for some rest before the food arrived.

 

Just as she was about to fall into dreamland, a loud noise startled her awake, for the second time that morning. This time, though, it wasn't a loud rumbling sound. It was the sound of a loud crash followed by some shouting. Claire let out a huff and whipped her head towards the ruckus, although a bit too quickly which resulted in her having a mini headache, and glared at the small group of people in an argument.

 

A person with long, raven colored hair had a sword to a man's neck. The latter was wearing a long, cream-colored, hooded jacket. The man was frightened, but tried not to show it, of the person with the sword.

 

"Oh, there are other female exorcists here too." Claire lazily mumbled, identifying the person with the long raven hair as an exorcist because of the crest they had on their coat. "It's nice to know that there are others other than me and Lenalee, but could she keep it down? I'm tired." Claire was about to go over to the group of people to get them to shut up so that she could take a power nap, but all thoughts regarding the noise were forgotten when she saw the plates of food being set out in front of her. "Ooh, yummy!"
 
After the meal, Claire decided to head over to Komui's office since he had told her to stop by. He had told her the previous day that her exorcist uniform should be ready that morning.
 
"Now, which way was it again?" Claire mumbled to herself as she wandered around the order. One thing that the Walker twins had in common was their horrible sense of direction. Claire got the better end of the deal though, her sense of direction not as bad as Allen's. Other than that, they weren't too alike.
 
Claire came to a stop at a fork and sighed. Now she had to decide which path to take between the two. "Eenie, meenie, miney... that one!" Claire hummed to herself as she trotted down the left path, hoping that it was the correct one. She'd later find out that it wasn't the right path though, especially since she bumped into a person.
 
"Hey, watch where you're going beansprout!" The person growled. "And shouldn't you still be in Mater watching after that stupid doll?!"
 
Claire looked up at the taller person and saw that she had bumped into the girl that she saw earlier. "Oh, you're that girl from the cafeteria!"
 
"G-girl...?" The person did not sound pleased. In fact, they sounded really angry.
 
"Oh wait, you're not a girl..." Claire blinked in realization at the deep voice the 'girl' possessed, along with the fact that although the person had feminine features, there were some features that were indeed more masculine, for instance, the hand that slowly made its way towards the handle of his sword.
 
"What makes you think that you could call me a girl and get away with it, beansprout?" The male placed his hand on the handle of his sword that was in its sheathe.
 
"Beansprout?" Claire frowned. "I'm not that short, am I?"
 
The male slowly let go of the blade as his eyes narrowed at the girl. "You're not that damn beansprout."
 
"What?" the girl questioned, clearly confused with what was going on.
 
"Che." The male ignored the girl and walked past her, towards the direction she had come from.
 
"Hey, don't ignore me!" The girl grabbed onto the male's arm. "And could you tell me where Komui's office is? I don't remember where it is..."
 
"Could they be any more similar to each other?" The boy muttered under his breath before letting out a grunt and continuing on his way.
 
Claire assumed that that was the signal to follow after, so she shrugged and trailed behind the raven haired swordsman. "Who are you, by the way?" The other exorcist didn't even give a response, so Claire just pouted and mumbled, "Asshat." She smirked when the male turned to her and glared.
 
Eventually, the two arrived at Komui's office. Claire made a mental note of the way, hopefully not forgetting where it was located. She didn't want a repeat of the meeting between her and the man she dubbed 'asshat.'
 
"Oh, how wonderful!" Komui smiled upon seeing the two enter his office, "Now I don't have to send someone to get you two."
 
"Just get on with it." The long haired exorcist demanded.
 
"Patience, Kanda." Komui ushered for the two to sit on the counch in front of his desk. "Anyways, I see you two have met."
 
"Not really." Claire said. "This asshole was being rude when he bumped into me."
 
The other male, Kanda, glared at the girl, "It's not my fault this blockhead decided to walk into me when there was a whole lot of space around me for her to walk on." The two engaged into a glaring contest, sparks flying off of the two of them. Komui noticed and decided to interrupt.
 
"Anyways," Komui cleared his throat at the tension in the air between the two before deciding that it was best to introduce the two. "Claire, this is Kanda. Kanda, this is Claire, Allen's sister. You two will be teaming up for the next mission, Claire's first in her case. There has been unnatural occurances in a small town in Bulgaria. Their cattle are disappearing and we think it's the work of innocence so you two need to go check it out."
 
"Great, first the beansprout and now I have to work with this blockhead to find cows." Kanda mumbled under his breath, but Claire caught it, not that he cared.
 
"Hey!" Claire shot Kanda a look.
 
"Here are the details of the mission." Komui handed each exorcist a manila folder with things the two needed to know inside. "And here's your uniform, Claire."
 
Claire grabbed hold of the uniform and looked over it, "..."
 
"Is something wrong with the uniform?" Komui questioned when he saw that she wasn't too thrilled about it.
 
"I'm going to annihilate whoever designed this." Claire stated.
 
"It's designed to fit your fighting style. The uniform was based on what little you told us: 'Whatever is fine. Just make sure I can easily move and manipulate the wind in.' You didn't really specify what else to do." Komui explained.
 
"...and I regret that. I'm not sure how shorts that don't even reach mid-thigh are supposed to 'fit my fighting style.'" Claire's left eye twitched, unamused at the perverts that designed the uniform.
 
"If you don't like it, just cover up with the coat." Kanda said matter-of-factly.
 
Claire scoffed, "I didn't ask for your opinion."
 
Kanda rolled his eyes, "Whatever."
 
"By the way, Komui," Claire said, "Where's Allen?"
 
"Allen is still in Mater." Komui answered, "Once the innocence has been taken care of, he'll be back."
 
Claire pouted, "Wasn't he supposed to come back sooner?"
 
"That beansprout's feelings got the better of him." Kanda scofffed.
 
Claire stuck her tongue out at the raven-haired swordsman, "Just because he has feelings and you don't doesn't mean you have to be so bitter."
 
"Well, I think you two best be off now." Komui said. "Good luck."
 
Claire and Kanda sat in a train compartment later that day, not speaking to one another. It was like they made a silent pact to not disturb the other. The two didn't even look at each other. However, boredom got the better of the girl. She needed someone to talk to since she wasn't the anti-social type, unlike someone else in the compartment.
 
"Hey, what do we have to do on this mission?" Claire asked Kanda.
 
"It's in your packet." he replied with his eyes closed.
 
"But I don't want to read it." Claire frowned, "there's too many pages."
 
"That's not my problem."
 
"Hey Kanda—that's your name, right?—did you know you look really pretty?" Claire asked, completely off topic from what she was asking him before. "I seriously thought you were a girl the first time I saw you. I guess all Japanese people look really pretty, since there was this guy that I knew one time that looked pretty as well. Maybe not as pretty as you but still reall—eep!"
 
"Shut up. You're really annoying." Claire had let out a squeak at the sword in front of her nose. Kanda glared at the girl, "Let's get some things straight. I don't work with others, so stay out of my way on this mission. If you are proving to be a hinderence, I will not hesitate to finish you off myself. I'm not going to help you out, so don't bother doing the same for me."
 
Claire twisted her lips at the male's words. "Gee, someone sure hates life. Not to worry though, I won't help a jerk like you."
 
"And do not ever call me pretty." Kanda gave one final hard glare before putting his sword away.
