Children hold our hands for a while, but our hearts forever.
Its my eldest daughter's third birthday.
In a few short hours, relatives will pour in through the doors. It's hectic.
But with Olivia's (my younger daughter) sleeping body pressed against my back, a sense of calmness radiates from her to me.
I'm braiding Alexis's hair. Tiny yellow flowers decorated her wavy brown hair.
Everything about her is such a contrast. But then again, she will always be perfect in my eye even though words have already started to spread.
I've heard more than enough nasty remarks to fully well know whats going on in this neighbourhood.
It's a shame to admit that innocent young children would grow up to become such uncompassionate creatures.
Mama...? a soft voice filled with love floats into my ears.
Yes Alexis? I look at her reflection in the mirror.
Thanks for braiding my hair. A small smile spreads across her face.
Alexis's next action caught me by surprise. She turns around and peek me lightly on my cheeks.
Alexis is a child of few words and even fewer actions. It's rare for her to extend her love so openly towards others. Including me. But one person seems to be an exception.
Sometimes, I do believe that Alexis is aware that she is slightly different from other children.
Deep inside, she may know. But I, as her mother will protect her, guide her and care for her no matter how she turns out.
I love you too Alexis. I said.
My dear daughter smiles again before hurrying off to greet her daddy which has just return from work.
