Series One, Episode Four - The Witch Has Spoken
Having been ‘sick’ for a number of days following Vera’s phone call, Ari wakes to find Letitia gone. Intending to find answers, she toys with the phone, hoping to once again speak to her mother. Talking to herself as she leaves the house, Ari pushes through crowds of people before making it to a phone repair shop. She converses with the owner, Nicolai, as he manages to restore the phone – on it thousands of corrupt messages from Vera. Sitting down at the bus shelter, she texts the number, and gets an almost instantaneous reply. The mother and daughter continue talking; never revealing personal details. As Arianna heads home that night, she receives her first expression of love – from both Vera and Letitia.
Sent by the criminal for a coffee run after many late nights, Julien recognises pop star Mina and strikes up a conversation with her. Although she initially seems unwilling, his mention of having a Power sibling delivers her instant attraction. After making a date, they meet back the next morning. Mina enquires about Kara, while both happily talk of their allegiances. A wide-eyed pop princess reveals to Julien Nickey’s true ability, and his connection with Maya. Walking the streets, Julien attempts to break up a brawl as he urges Mina to hide. As both run from the young thieves, he brings her to his ‘base’. After more magic conversation, she leaves – agreeing to meet his boss in two days’ time.
Meeting with his girlfriend for dinner, a romantic Tristan becomes disgruntled as both she and Nickey sit down. While they talk between themselves about work, he quickly expresses his jealousy. They continue to talk awkwardly, as Maya explains that Nickey is her cousin. Tristan remembers while she speaks, pointing out that on their first date, she told him that her only cousins were ’13 year olds in the Asylum’. They try to talk their way out of it, but he catches their bluff – and quietly blows up about betraying his boss. Tristan leaves in haste; Maya making him promise to keep the secret. The Fertaine cousins keep talking, hiding their faces as they see Mina from afar. They sneak out, headed to Maya’s apartment – continuing to express hope in Tristan’s trust capacity.
Revealed to be a house servant to Charlie, Edmund is invited by him for ‘drinks & an early mark’. They share deep conversation, Charlie showing extreme trust in the janitor. As a car comes crashing through the wall of the bar they’re in, they take to a nearby nightclub. After speaking quickly of the magic, Charlie gets dancing with a young girl – leaving Edmund to find his own way home. Mumbling to himself, he walks past an orphanage and whispers for his wish of children, despite his infertility. Walking into his apartment, he finds an adoption application – smiling with hope.
Returning to school after a week, Ari is met with open arms – especially Darcy’s. They share a lunchtime picnic, with Arianna enquiring about the phone. He reveals he had no idea of the phone being in prior use. They quickly change the subject, talking of her ‘sickness’ and the week’s events, as Letitia joins them. That night, the schoolteacher talks deep with Ari, knowing of the secret messages of Vera. As Ari is about to reveal her Powership, the phone rings. Not allowing her technically adopted daughter to answer it, Letitia takes it – to Ari’s surprise happiness.
Going back to the abandoned building, Edmund finds a distressed V taking his anger at an unknown situation out on poles on the roof. Trying to stop the man from using magic, the janitor hugs him, saying to forget all his worries. Catching V by surprise, he pushes him away, but calms down enough to talk. Edmund talks happily of ‘securing a link’, as they talk more about magic. V reveals his newest plan to find and take one of the Powers in himself, revealing he knows their names. The pouring rain not bothering either, they continue to share a heart to heart. Suddenly, a focused V rushes into the lab and calls H – a disguised voice who reveals his magic lets him feel that Ari is a Power.
Meeting Mina outside the building, Julien rushes her into their high tech base of operations. They talk of planning to free the Powers – Mina to bring magic to the world, and Julien to save Kara. As they enter and the delivery man introduces Mina to his boss, she addresses him as ‘father’ – revealing the Aeternam half of her mixed heritage. After a brief conversation about her estranged mother in Japan, they get to work. Her deep knowledge of technology is shown, as she breaks into the Asylum’s central computer – while the two men watch in awe.
