Chapter 2

“Where do they get these pictures? My mom does not look like this!” Sophia scoffed as she was scanning some pictures. “Not even close. My mom is prettier than a goddess.” Sophia placed the book back and saw a familiar figure carrying so many books.

“L?” she asked herself and tilted her head a bit so she could get a better view of the said figure’s face. “It is L!” Sophia whispered to herself. L was being uncomfortable so he decided to drop the books on the ground. “Oh! Was it too heavy?” Sophia asked herself worryingly.  L grabbed a small book that was in between to larger books and Sophia’s eyes widened. “Gorgos vivlio.” She gasped.

(flashback)

“What are you writing Sir Hermes?” A teen-aged Sophia asked Hermes. Hermes pats her head and motioned his hand so she would come closer. “This book is for the Gorgon sisters, Stefania. Gorgos vivlio.”Sophia’s eyes sparkled upon hearing her mother’s family. “You mean Medusa, Euryale and Stheno?” Hermes nods and smiles softly while caressing Sophia’s head.

“Why do we have to write books for them?” Sophia asked as she was scanning through the pages. “Be careful Stefania! The ink is still a bit wet and this is special paper. And to answer your question Stefenia, the Gorgon sisters are legends, and I plan to make them popular even after thousands of years. That’s why I’m using this special paper Stefania, so that even after a thousand years this book will still live.”

Sophia’s eyes kept reading, carefully turning each page. “Oh! Here’s my mommy and daddy! You wrote them in your book too?” Hermes stiffened and knew that there were things written in there that Sophia must not see. “Of course I did Stefenia!”

Hermes grabbed his brush and quickly thought of something. “I know why don’t we place you here. Your mother is here, of course her pretty daughter has to be here also.” Hermes exclaimed while tilting Sophia’s head up. “Paint me Hermes!”

Hermes couldn’t say no to the precious thing so he did paint a picture of Sophia. “Hold still Stefenia.” Hermes said as Sophia tried to hold still. “Done.” Hermes said as he was holding the piece of paper that had Sophia’s picture in it. Sophia quickly climbed down the chair and tiptoed to see her picture.

“I look exactly like mommy. I was she was still here to see this.” Sophia said as tears were forming in her eyes. “Why did King Poseidon have to kill them? WHY HERMES?!” Sophia cried as she held Herme’s toga tighter. ”Hey. Don’t cry Stefenia. Here I’ll place your name here. Look.”

Sophia rubbed her eyes and watched Hermes hand form the phrase, “Euryale’s secret daughter, Stefenia.” Sophia’s eyes widened and her lips formed into a small ‘o’. “I’m not a secret Hermes!” Hermes smiled and carried Sophia upstairs and laid her down, as Sophia’s eyes were slightly closing.

“I was supposed to kill you Stefenia. As the daughter of an unacceptable love, I was ordered to kill you. But, I couldn’t. Nessus and Euryale may be one of the so called demons, but you shouldn’t suffer their consequences.” Hermes sighed and looked at the beautiful picture of Sophia, or as her original name, Stefenia.

“Stefenia must be known.” Hermes grabbed the painted picture and placed it in the end of the book all with the other pictures. Sophia’s was last and he carefully placed it so that it wouldn’t fall off. “You will be known Stefenia.”

“One look and L will surely recognize me. I still look the same. I haven’t aged one bit.” Sophia stiffened as he saw L going to the librarian to borrow the book. “I have to do something.” She quickly ran out the door and ran to the rooftop.

“I have to direct L here.” Sophia closed her eyes and sang a greek melody. Her beautiful voice was travelling to L’s ears. She focused so that the song could ONLY be heard by L. She finished her song and opened her eyes. “I hope this works.”

L walked out of the library doors while reading the first page of the book. “The Gorgon sisters are known as 3 sisters who has deadly powers. With their unedifying beauty- wait! They’re beautiful?! I thought-” L stopped reading the book as a melody was ringing to his ears.

L was automatically attached to the song and he began following where the song was leading him. He passed the school’s court, several halls, the canteen even the boy’s dormitory. Finally, he reached the Science department’s building and he climbed the rooftop, still hypnotized by the sweet and mellifluent melody.

L opened the door and saw a small figure hugging her knees. Her hair slightly covering half her face. “Sophia?” L asked as he finally recognized who she was. He crouched in front of her and tried shaking her so that she would look up.

Sophia slightly tilts her head up and L was automatically hypnotized. His ears were full of Sophia’s silent crying, his eyes were fixed on Sophia’s beauty. Sophia’s eyes turned Emerald green and were focused on L’s eyes. L lost his balance and was now completely sprawled all over the floor. Sophia did not look away and continued her eye contact with L, slowly inching her face to his.

L’s eyes were getting larger and larger as Sophia was inching from him. Sophia closed her eyes only to snap her eyes wide open. Her eyes were even brighter and it was more intense. Finally L lost his consciousness and his eyes were finally closed.

Sophia stood up only to crawl back into a ball. She hugged her knees and her body rocked forward then backwards, forward then backwards, forward then backwards, repeating the same sequence. Sophia muffled her mourning with her hand, afraid that she might kill thousands of people whomever hears her crying. “I’m so sorry L.” Sophia cried harder.
