"Why must you do this to yourself?" Her friend ask her.
She was in pain. In pain just looking at him with his new girlfriend. Yet she refused to admit it.
"Do what?" She responded in forced cheerfulness.
Her lips curled up into a small smile and her clenched fists behind her back, hidden from the sight of her friend.
Her friend sighed and pulled her into a hug. And her light, thinning body fell into the warm embrace easily.
"You know you don't need to lie in front of me. I will always be here for you."
That was the trigger.
Tears fell as she choked back a sob.
Her friend patted her back gently and coaxed, "It's fine to cry."
"It hu-hurts." She wept bitterly.
Her fists unclenched and she wrapped her trembling arms around the only comfort she could find right then.
Slowly stroking her hair, her friend whispered repeatedly, "It will be fine."
At the same moment, his head turned in her direction.
Seeing her cry struck a sore spot in his heart.
He wanted to run up to her and be the one to comfort her instead. To amuse her and make her laugh. To make her happy again.
But there was just one thing stopping him, "She is...not mine anymore."
"Dear," he vaguely heard a whine beside him and turned to see her pouting at him.
He smiled.
"Let's go to class!" She spoke again and he shook out of his hallucinations.
Not her.
His smile dimmed and he lightly nodded.
His girlfriend pulled his hand excitedly as she rambled on about her classes. But he wasn't listening at all. His head slightly turned and he looked at his love longingly.
"Why must you push me away?" He mused, the pain smearing all over his heart.
Separated? Maybe. However, their tortured hearts shall always be entwined till forever ends.
