remarks ;
The book is about a boy, who after a family tragedy, is led into an orphanage that houses peculiar children in a Wlsh Island. Originally intended to be a picture book, the story is told through a combination of narratives and vintage photographs collected by the author. What is noteworthy about the book is that the whole narrative was put together using the photographs as a guide which is the opposite of what usually happensi in picture story books: the text comes first and then the pictures. I would say that children from the third grade onwards would appreciate this book as the concept is very appealing to children. If it has influenced me in any way, the book definitely made me want to read its sequel Hollow City. Compared to other historical horror books, I would say that this book is more leaning on the fantasy side rather than inserting much historical trivias, which I appreciate.
